3 Tips to Help Your Child Learn To Love Veggies

Updated: May 30

As parents, we all want our children to eat a balanced and nutritious diet, but getting them to eat their vegetables can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. If you find yourself wondering, "How do I get my child to even eat any vegetables?" you're not alone. Luckily, there are a few strategies you can use to try to encourage your little one to embrace the wonderful world of veggies. Here are my top 3 tips to help make vegetables more appealing to your young eater:

1. Make Vegetables Taste Good: One of the simplest ways to encourage your child to eat vegetables is to make them taste delicious! Experiment with different seasonings, sauces, and cooking methods to enhance the flavor of veggies. Try roasting veggies with olive oil and garlic, grilling them with a sprinkle of seasoning, or adding cheese or butter for extra flavor. You can also serve them alongside a delicious dip like ranch dressing, guacamole, or hummus. Bland, lifeless veggies don't taste good to anyone, let alone your kiddos. So save yourself the drama and don't be afraid to get creative in the kitchen and give those veggies a little bit of flavor!

2. Try Different Colors and Presentations: If your child turns up their nose at one type of vegetable, don't give up hope just yet! Experiment with different colors or presentations to make vegetables more appealing. For example, if your child doesn't like green bell peppers, try red or yellow ones instead. You can also try serving vegetables in different forms, such as raw with a dip or roasted until crispy. Variety is the spice of life, and it can make vegetables more enticing to inexperienced taste buds.

3. Offer Them Early and Often: Introducing vegetables to your child's diet from an early age is key to fostering a love of veggies. Start offering a variety of vegetables to your little one as soon as they start their transition to solid foods, and continue to expose them to different colors, textures, and flavors as they grow. Remember, repetition is key here—your child may not love a veggie the first time they try it, but continued exposure can help them develop a taste for it over time.

By incorporating these strategies into your mealtime routine, you can help your child develop a positive relationship with veggies and set them on the path to a lifetime of healthy eating habits. Remember, every child is different, so don't be discouraged if it takes some trial and error to find the veggies that your little one loves. With patience, persistence, and a bit of creativity, you can turn veggie refusal into veggie appreciation in no time!
